Due to the severe weather that traveled through northeast Colorado, all Yuma schools will be closed Tuesday.

YUMA, Colo. — Yuma School District will be closed Tuesday after severe weather impacted the area Monday night.

The northeast Colorado school district said all Yuma schools, as well as its district offices, would be closed Tuesday.

“Due to the severe weather that came through town tonight, All Yuma Schools including the district offices will be closed tomorrow, Tuesday, May 21, 2024. All activities will be cancelled,” the district announced.

Severe storms moved across northeast Colorado Monday night, bringing large hail, damaging winds and prompting Tornado Warnings. The northeastern corner of Colorado, and parts of Kansas and Nebraska, were under a Tornado Watch until 11 p.m. Monday.

Numerous Tornado Warnings were issued in the area. The warnings were issued due to radar-indicated rotation. There was one report of a possible tornado five miles south of Laird, Colorado, according to the National Weather Service.

The storms did drop large hail over the plains. 9NEWS Meteorologist Cory Reppenhagen found baseball and ping pong-sized hail near Akron on Monday.

Thunderstorms with brief heavy rain and pea-sized hail also moved through parts of the Denver metro area Monday afternoon and evening.

Denver International Airport issued a ground stop at 3:15 p.m. Monday. It was lifted just after 4 p.m.

A cold front passed through Sunday into Monday, providing a northeast wind resulting in upslope conditions that had the potential to produce severe storms.

After Monday’s severe weather, the potential for rain will continue Tuesday in eastern Colorado. Areas above 8,500 are likely to see snow, adding up to around 5 inches in northern locations.

Temperatures in Denver will briefly warm Thursday before a relatively seasonal Friday, through the weekend and into next week with a chance for that late storm each day.
