New all-terrain wheelchairs will allow people with mobility issues to enjoy the outdoors at two Aurora natural areas year round and free of charge.

AURORA, Colo. — Two Aurora natural areas are now offering new all-terrain wheelchairs to help people with mobility issues enjoy the outdoors.

The city of Aurora’s Open Space and Natural Resources Division announced Thursday that it has made available the Action Trackchair®, an all-terrain wheelchair that allows people with mobility issues to enjoy both trails and other nature adventures.

“It just opens the door to have fun as a family together; I’m just really grateful that Aurora thought of families like ours,” said Aurora resident Melissa Chavez, who was able to use an Action Trackchair® with her son Anthony at Star K Ranch.

According to a press release, the track chairs can be reserved free of charge for use year-round at the Plains Conservation Center located at 21901 E. Hampden Ave. and Star K Ranch located at 16002 E. Smith Road.

Track chairs are available only during center hours, and rentals are limited to two hours. Participants are asked to complete a questionnaire about their preferred dates at AuroraGov.org/TrackChairs. At this time, walk-up or drop-in users cannot be accommodated.

There is no minimum weight requirement for an Action Trackchair®, but the maximum weight limit is 300 pounds. For those who require it, car seats or boosters can be secured into the track chair. It is also recommended that people bring a water bottle, bug spray, sunscreen, snacks, a sun hat, an umbrella, rain gear or extra layers depending on the weather.
