DENVER — New security measures are in place following a double homicide at a former hotel that’s now being used to house people experiencing homelessness.

Denver Police said a man and woman were found dead Saturday in a room at the former DoubleTree hotel at 4040 North Quebec Street. Police are still searching for a suspect in the case.

So far this year, Denver Police have been called out to that shelter 414 times. Now, for the first time, unarmed security guards are patrolling the property.

Mayor Mike Johnston’s office told 9NEWS they’re in the process of installing a badging system with photo ID cards for residents and staff. They’re also adding more surveillance cameras both inside and outside the building.

The mayor’s office said as part of the new safety plan, staff will perform weekly check-ins with each resident at the shelter.

Resident Jason Hatt said he feels safe living there, but said the atmosphere has drastically changed since Saturday.

“It’s very quiet,” he said. “Everyone is just keeping to themselves in their rooms. That’s really all it is. Very withdrawn, I’d say. The people that passed away were incredibly influential in this community. They were really huge pillars, if you will. They’ve done so much for so many people. It’s really unfortunate that they’re not here now.”

The names of the victims have not yet been released.
