Welcome to TechRadar’s new Max movies article. In this guide, we’ve rounded up all of the new movies that are destined to launch (or have launched) on HBO Max’s successor over the next few weeks.
Max‘s movie library was already stacked before the addition of these flicks, but their arrivals are nonetheless pleasing – especially the ones developed by Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), who owns Max, that weren’t part of Max’s back catalog. To that end, we’ve handpicked a few of Max’s new movies to include in our spotlights section; films that we believe are well worth watching before March ends. If you’re after a full list of every new film on Max this month, you’ll find that in the section underneath our spotlights one.
Looking for even more Max recommendations? Our best Max movies guide should be your next port of call. You know, once you’ve read this one from start to finish. Here, then, are all of the new features set to launch on one of the globe’s best streaming services very soon.
New Max movies: the best films to stream in March
Deadpool
Release date: March 1
With Deadpool set to make his Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) bow in Deadpool and Wolverine later this year, now is as good a time as any to catch up on the Merc With a Mouth’s other cinematic adventures.
Unfortunately, only one of the Ryan Reynolds-starring films – 2016’s Deadpool – is among March’s new Max movies. But hey, if you want to watch its 2018 sequel, you should sign up to Disney Plus to catch it and many more X-Men-adjacent movies before Deadpool 3, the only Marvel Phase 5 movie of 2024, arrives.
But we digress. If you love R-rated, self-aware, unexpectedly funny, and occasionally melodramatic superhero films, you’ll love Deadpool. Reynolds was born to play this role, capturing the quintessential essence of the fourth wall breaking character with poise, precision, and unadulterated hilarity. Stick it on your Max watchlist ASAP.
Godzilla (2014)
Release date: March 1
Another of 2024’s new movies in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is set to hit theaters very soon, so you should check out (or rewatch) every MonsterVerse film to date before it does so.
Thankfully, 2014’s Godzilla, plus 2017’s Kong: Skull Island and 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters have rejoined Max’s back catalog ahead of The New Empire’s arrival. They’re all terrific watches – as is 2021’s Godzilla vs Kong, which is also available on Max – but Godzilla is the standout among them, with its slow burning plot and brief glimpses of the titular titan ratcheting up the tension and sci-fi drama to stunning effect. Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, the hit Apple TV Plus show that sits between Godzilla’s 2014 and 2019 films, is worth streaming, too.
Scream 1 to 3
Release date: March 1
The Scream movies were hugely popular in the late 1990s/early 2000s and helped to usher in a new era of horror genre fare. Wes Craven’s deliciously metatextual slasher films were boldly original in their makeup, made stars of their largely female cast – including Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox – overnight, and introduced audiences to Ghostface, one of the most iconic horror movie villains of all-time.
After an 11-year hiatus, most likely due to failing box office returns and mixed audience reception to Scream 3 and 4, the franchise was revived in 2022 and met with critical acclaim. Scream 5 and 6 introduced the series to a new generation, all the while reinventing its stale premise and subsequently storming the box office. Right now, only the first three films are viewable on Max, but they’re worth checking out, even if Scream 3 is a bit of a dud.
Wonka
Release date: March 8
If you’re looking for a bit more Timothée Chalamet after seeing him star in the complex but visually arresting sci-fi epic Dune Part 2, we’ve got *ahem* just the ticket for you. Wonka, a prequel tale that shows the titular chocolatier’s rise to fame before Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, is a colorful, poignant, and fun-filled family-friendly flick that’ll warm the cockles of your heart. Oh, and its musical numbers will be stuck in your head for weeks on end.
Chalamet delivers an earnest, entertaining performance as the film’s protagonist, but Hugh Grant’s Oompa-Loompa is arguably the real star of the show. Bringing his signature dry British humor to the fore, the orange skinned individual is a delight. We don’t usually ask for spin-offs, but we’d watch one with him in it.
Dream Scenario
Release date: March 15
After the arrival of over 100 A24 movies on Max in late December – and Priscilla‘s Max debut last month – the acclaimed indie film studio’s latest endeavour will land on the super streamer in mid-March.
Beloved actor Nicolas Cage stars as Paul Matthews, a mild-mannered and reclusive biology teacher who suddenly starts showing up in everyone’s dreams/nightmares. Initially bowled over by his sudden rise to fame, Matthews soon finds his life unraveling as he buys into his burgeoning celebrityism and the inevitable pitfalls associated with becoming an overnight sensation. One of this month’s new Max movies that’s as absurd as it is darkly comedic and melodramatic.
