Keystone is officially a town with the swearing in of its first ever mayor and six-person town council.

KEYSTONE, Colo. — Keystone is officially the newest town in Colorado and officially has a mayor with Ken Riley elected to that role.

“I’m the first mayor,” said Riley.

Residents in Keystone voted to break away from Summit County and become their own town.

They spent months drafting a town charter, then a mayor and town council were elected and Feb. 8, it all was made official with the swearing in of the elected representatives of Colorado’s newest town.

“One of the thoughts has you think about it, be careful what you ask for because you’ll get it,” said Riley. “This has been a big dream for a bunch of people going back almost 50 years.”

Along with the mayor, Keystone now has a six-person town council that held its first town council session right after they were sworn in with plans to improve pedestrian safety on Highway 6 and connect more trails around Keystone

“Getting pedestrians off Highway 6, giving pedestrians a way to get across Highway 6 safely,” said Riley. “Moving on trails an open space looking at a plan for all the trails systems in Keystone and integrate them together.”

The new Keystone town hall is being set up in the Keystone Center, a building town leaders hope to make their permeant home saying it’s surrounded by six acres of land that could be a great sport for affordable workforce housing.
