Q. What is an apprenticeship?
A. Apprenticeship opportunities allow you to earn as you learn. You get to combine that educational classroom work while also working in the field that you’re pursuing that degree in- so you get that paycheck and also go to class then get to go into the real world and apply what you’re learning.
Q. What apprenticeships does CommonSpirit Health offer?
A. There are five programs offered: Medical Assisting, Pharmacy Tech, Sterile Processing, Medical Lab Tech, or Surgical Tech. Medical Assistants greet patients, take their vital signs and assist providers. Sterile Processors work in sterile labs making sure equipment is safe to use on patients. Pharmacy Techs help pharmacists provide medications. Medical Lab Techs test for bacteria and viruses. Surgical Techs work in the O.R. assisting surgeons and nurses.
Q. Why should someone consider an apprenticeship over more traditional routes?
A. Some of the traditional pathways may take a little bit longer…for example Medical Assistant training can take 12-24 months, an apprenticeship program can get you certified as an apprentice in Medical Assisting in as little as 6 months.
Q. What are the requirements to enter an apprenticeship program?
A. Some of programs have specific requirements, but others require only a High School diploma or GED to get started. Apprenticeships are a fantastic way to get started in a career in healthcare.
