GREELEY, Colo. — A woman in Greeley was sentenced to life in prison Wednesday for the murder of a woman in November 2022.
A jury convicted 28-year-old Mary Alicia Garcia of first-degree murder on Tuesday for killing 21-year-old Herminia Marquez in 2022.
According to the Greeley Police Department, officers responded to a shooting on November 28, 2022, in the 1100 block of 24th Street Lane.
When officers arrived on scene, they found Marquez, who appeared to be shot. She was later pronounced dead.
Garcia was on parole at the time of the shooting. In the following months, Garcia had three additional warrants out for her arrest for three separate robberies.
Greeley officers arrested Garcia for the murder in January 2023 after a vehicle pursuit Greeley police said lasted for about six miles.
“Minnie was a bright and loving woman with a heart full of dreams and aspirations,” Marquez’s father said during Wednesday’s sentencing hearing, according to a release from the 19th Judicial District Attorney’s Office. “The pain of losing a child is a burden no parent should ever have to bear. The grief we feel is overwhelming.”
“The pain and devastation that has consumed me since that day is beyond words,” Marquez’s mother said. “Life will never be the same because a part of my heart died that day. Losing her has left a void that nothing can fill.”
