The fire behind an elementary school is about 30% contained, according to Fort Carson officials.
FORT CARSON, Colo. — A fire burned roughly 106 acres behind an elementary school at Fort Carson and was roughly 30% contained as of 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
Firefighters with the Fort Carson Directorate of Emergency Services Fire Department responded to the fire near Patriot Elementary School around 1 p.m. Thursday. The school was evacuated; however, no students were present because it is spring break.
The Sam Houston Loop within the Dakota Ridge housing area was under pre-evacuation as a precaution, Fort Carson officials said. Some people chose to evacuate. As of 3 p.m., they said that order was no longer in effect and everyone was allowed to return home.
Cheyenne Mountain Child Development Center and Patriot School Age Services were evacuated to the youth center. Gate 1 was closed to inbound traffic but has since reopened.
Officials had planned to do some controlled burns Thursday but said they did not do them due to the winds and said the fire was unrelated to that.
The fire is considered “under control”; however, firefighters will remain on scene throughout the evening and overnight, due to shifting winds and the possibility for the fire to move quickly.
They’re still working to determine the cause and origin.
