The shooting happened Sunday afternoon in unincorporated Elbert County, the sheriff’s office said.

ELBERT COUNTY, Colo. — A man is accused of fatally shooting his fiance’s ex-boyfriend during a child custody exchange Sunday afternoon, the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office said.

The sheriff’s office said it happened just before 3 p.m. Sunday on County Road 166 in unincorporated Elbert County. Someone called 911 and said the two men were fighting with each other, deputies said. One of the men pulled out a gun and shot the other, the sheriff’s office said.

The sheriff’s office said the victim, a 36-year-old man from Parker, was at the scene to conduct a child custody exchange with his ex-girlfriend. The victim and the ex-girlfriend’s fiance got into a fight, and the fiance shot the victim, the sheriff’s office said.

The suspect, 26-year-old Jeffrey Church of Colorado Springs, is being held on first-degree murder charges, the sheriff’s office said. His next court appearance is set for Feb. 20.
