In Colorado, prices reflect an anticipated softening of demand as ski travel comes to an end just before summer travel begins.

DENVER — Colorado has some of the lowest gas prices in the United States, but prices are expected to rise as summer blends arrive in May.

Colorado has the second-cheapest gas prices in the country with an average of $3.16 per gallon of regular unleaded, according to AAA. That is 51 cents below the national average. According to AAA, drivers are seeing low prices because of low demand and we’re at the end of ski season.

AAA reports that Colorado’s gas prices are down from $3.58 this time last year.

“I would say Coloradans will start to see an increase in prices around May. The reason for that is because functionally the refinery switches over, once they switch over, they’re producing reformulated gas that it’s expensive to produce,” said Skyler McKinley, regional director of public affairs for AAA.

Gas prices are expected to rise as the summer travel season begins and summer blends arrive in stories.

“Coloradans should make the most of comparatively low prices while they can,” said Skyler McKinley, regional director of public affairs for AAA. “Looking ahead to a robust summer travel season combined with the long-expected, EPA-mandated switchover to reformulated gasoline, it won’t be long until Colorado sits above the national average.”
