Gerilynn “Lynn” Amaro, 71, faces felony assault charges.
STRASBURG, Colo. — Arapahoe County deputies have arrested a caretaker accused of physically abusing a man with special needs.
The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office said on Jan. 20, deputies were dispatched to a home in Strasburg on a report of a man with special needs who was threatening other family members and assaulting them.
While they were there, deputies learned the man lived at the home with his family. The sheriff’s office said deputies were given video evidence of physical abuse and dehumanizing acts against the man, who had been forced to exercise for extended periods with a bar of soap in his mouth as punishment.
Deputies also discovered the man had visible facial injuries and was covered in bruises, the sheriff’s office said. He was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Investigators interviewed the man’s caregiver, 71-year-old Gerilynn “Lynn” Amaro, and arrested her on Feb. 7 on felony charges of second and third-degree assault on an at-risk person.
Amaro was released from jail the next day on a personal recognizance bond.
The sheriff’s office is investigating the case with Arapahoe County Human Services.
