The Argentine goalkeeper was replaced by Robin Olsen for the clash against Man City at the Etihad Stadium.

A club statement was posted on social media confirming the last-minute change.

It read: “Robin Olsen will start in goal for Aston Villa. Emi Martínez misses out through illness.”

Villa fans were in shock on social media as they reacted to the news.

One fan posted: “Confidence just went from fractional to imperceptible.”

A second commented: “We could lose this by five, I’m so serious,”

A third wrote: “That’s the beginning of the end.”

A fourth said: “Good lord, just forfeit the match.”

Another added: “Looking more and more like a write-off this match.”

Every Premier League club’s most famous and also most surprising fan

Man City has their own shock changes as both Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland were dropped to the bench.

Martinez has been a mainstay for Villa this season, having featured in 30 Premier League fixtures.

Olsen, however, has only played in one game, which was the 3-1 win over Burnley back in August.

The Swede has also appeared in the Conference League and League Cup this season.
