During their first encounter, Rooney, 38, showed that he was confident in his ability and Carragher revealed.

Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, the Liverpool great revealed what Rooney’s first ten words were to him.

He said: “I just thought about something then, obviously you [Wayne Rooney] talk about going back to Everton, obviously you started at Everton – the thing that really stood out about you, for me you were a great player.

“But it wasn’t just about your ability to score goals, it was your mentality.

“I’m not saying it’s a Liverpool thing, but you know, that sort of, ‘up for it, fight the world’.

“I remember the first time I met you – in The State, it was a nightclub – well we were in a state!

“You come up to me, how old do you think you were there?

“It was a bit like, ‘yeah, I’m Rooney – you’ll be hearing a lot about me.’ And you were right!”

As Carragher admitted, Rooney did prove to be right as he went on to become one of the best strikers in the history of the Premier League.

He made a big money move to Manchester United from Everton in 2004 worth £27million.
