Denver Nuggets head coach Michael Malone lost his final high school game to his rival Mike Pedone.
DENVER — We never seem to forget our high school sports memories and Denver Nuggets head coach Michael Malone remembers pain.
“My last game,” he recalled. “We lost to Bergen Catholic in the Northern State finals. I remember that game like it was yesterday and I cried like a baby after that game because it hurt so much. And a kid named Mike Pedone kicked our ass and I’m still pissed about that.”
It turns out Mike Pedone of Bergen County, New Jersey still gets a kick … out of kicking butt. We tracked down Mike and showed him Coach Malone’s interview.
“I was dying laughing cuz I figured he wouldn’t remember my name,” laughed Pedone, who grew up in Ridgewood, New Jersey in Bergen County. “To be honest with you, that’s my claim to fame. Any time we watch the Nuggets on TV, I’ll tell my friends or whoever I’m sitting with I’m like, my greatest game ever was played against that guy. I dropped 35 points! It still pisses him off to this day.”
Pedone recalls Malone being mad about the loss months after, “After the season, I remember seeing him at AAU things and he was still pretty upset and we goofed around about it.”
Even after becoming an NBA champion, Malone … still remembers Pedone.
“That was my last game in high school and yeah you’re gonna go on to play in college but there’s nothing like high school,” said Malone. “The losses stay with you. You’ll take those to the grave.”
