The two clubs have had a friendly rivalry over the last few years but there appears to be a bit of extra spice heading into this Anfield encounter.

Alexander-Arnold started the war of words by claiming Liverpool’s trophies mean more to them and their fanbase because of the financial differences between the clubs.

Haaland, 23, smirked as the defender’s words were read to him and he responded with a clever take down.

The City star told Sky Sports: “If he wants to say that, okay. I’ve been here one year and I’ve won the Treble.

“It was quite a nice feeling. I don’t think he knows exactly this feeling.

“That’s what I felt last season and it was quite nice.”

Alexander-Arnold was asked about the Reds’ title chances in a fierce race that has pitted them against City and Arsenal.

The England star admitted it would be “tough” to beat Pep Guardiola’s side before describing his opponents as a “machine”.

Alexander-Arnold, 25, said: “We’re up against a machine that’s built to win – that’s the simplest way to describe City and their organisation.

“Looking back on this era, although they’ve won more titles than us and have probably been more successful, our trophies will mean more to us and our fanbase because of the situations at both clubs, financially.

“How both clubs have built their teams and the manner in which we’ve done it, probably means more to our fans.”
