Sean Gipson, 34, was shot during the altercation with his dad, Billy Gipson, on Jan. 7.
HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. — A man fatally stabbed by his son inside a Highlands Ranch home armed himself with a gun because he lived in fear of his son, according to an arrest affidavit from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
On Jan. 7, deputies responded to a report of gunshots at 800 Elmhurst Drive around 10:30 a.m. When they arrived they found the body of 73-year-old Billy Gipson on the living room floor. He had visible stab wounds, the affidavit says.
Deputies also located Sean Gipson, 34, on the floor. He was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Investigators recovered a handgun about two feet from Billy Gipson and found its magazine was empty and there were multiple shell casings around the room.
They spoke with Sean Gipson’s mother who related that he had been diagnosed with schizophrenia in 2018 but was off his medication and was displaying schizophrenic behavior, the affidavit says. She reported that he had previously made threats to family members and said she feared he would hurt her or her husband Billy.
She went on to say that Billy occasionally armed himself with a handgun “due to his fear of Sean,” the affidavit says. On the morning of the shooting, she said that she and Billy had a conversation with Sean about their desire for him to take his prescribed medicine, the affidavit says. During it, she said Sean suddenly pulled the drapes closed and approached Billy while making a stabbing motion, according to the document.
She ran from the residence and heard gunshots as she exited.
Sean Gipson is due in court on Jan. 18 when formal charges are expected to be filed.
