Fable 4, otherwise simply known as Fable, is the next installment in the tongue-in-cheek series of fantasy RPGs originally developed by Lionhead Studios. The series is now in the hands of PlayGround Games, who are working on the product alongside publisher Xbox Game Studios.
Though we don’t know much about what to expect yet, the game’s reveal trailer at 2023 Summer Games Fest impressed and delighted fans with its drama and wit. Framed around a monologue from talented British comedian and actor Richard Ayoade, the trailer features a horticultural enthusiast who, in a sudden twist, turns out to be a terrifying giant reminiscent of Jack and the Beanstalk. While the preview didn’t show off any game mechanics, it’s good to know that the series’ trademark humor is still going strong.
It’s been over a decade since we last saw a mainline Fable game released to the public. Playground Games, famous for the Forza Horizon series, looks to be making the jump from a realistic racing game to a fantasy RPG. However, these sorts of dramatic moves can often pay off for studios and fans alike. For instance, Insomniac Games has had great success with the dramatic and action-packed Marvel’s Spider-Man series – quite a contrast with whimsical platformer series Spyro for which the studio was previously known. With any luck, Playground will pull off a similar triumph. For now, read on to learn everything we know about Fable 4
Fable 4: cut to the chase
- What is it? The fourth installment in the mainline Fable franchise
- When is it coming out? There’s no release date yet but don’t expect it soon
- What can I play it on? TBC, but it’s an Xbox exclusive
Fable 4 release date and platforms

Fable 4 does not currently have a release date. The earliest we’d hope for is mid-2024, though 2025 seems far more likely.
Phil Spencer hinted during an IGN podcast that we’ll get it before The Elder Scrolls 6, though that game also doesn’t have a release date yet and isn’t expected to release for a long while yet.
We do, however, know the platforms we can expect Fable 4 to land on. As an Xbox exclusive, Fable 4 will be released for Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC, where it’ll be available on Xbox Game Pass from day one. It’s unknown if it’ll arrive on Xbox One consoles, but it seems unlikely.
Fable 4 trailers
The latest trailer for Fable was released at the Xbox Games Showcase event that aired on June 12, 2023. It was another cinematic trailer, showing Richard Ayoade playing a humble purveyor of fruit and vegetables as he bemoaned the antics of local fantasy heroes. It was a fun trailer but offered a distinct lack of concrete information about the wider plot or game mechanics. You can check it out below:
Right now, only two Fable trailers have been released: the world premiere announcement trailer, and the one shown off at Xbox Games Showcase 2023. In the meantime, you can head to the official Xbox YouTube account to keep an eye out for new info.

Fable 4 gameplay

While we’ve yet to see extended gameplay for Fable, there were some glimpses of what we might be able to expect in the latest trailer. Sword combat was shown, with a warrior depicted in battle with a bandit before performing a sort of finishing move, throwing them to the ground.
Another shot of gameplay showed the main character throwing a fire bomb at a group of enemies, suggesting that these sorts of items might also be making a return. Unfortunately, this is all we’ve seen so far, alongside some in-engine cinematics.
That said, Aaron Greenberg, general manager of Xbox Games Marketing at Microsoft, did make it clear after the reveal that “it’s obviously going to be a role-playing game” (via GamesRadar). Though this gives us little to go on in terms of specifics, it confirms that Fable 4 will likely place an emphasis on storytelling, character customization, and player agency, much like its predecessors.
