Simone Biles and Suni Lee — the reigning Olympic champion — were both looking to make history in the all-around final.
PARIS, France — Simone Biles made history again by winning the gold medal Thursday in the women’s gymnastics all-around final – and it all came down to the final rotation.
The 27-year-old becomes the first woman to claim multiple Olympic all-around golds since Vera Caslavska of Czechoslovakia went back-to-back in 1964 and 1968. She’s also the oldest women’s all-around champion since 1952.
The silver medal went to Brazilian star Rebeca Andrade and the bronze to defending Olympic all-around champion Suni Lee.
Biles kicked things off on vault and used her signature skill the Yurchenko double pike to jump out to an early lead in the competition.
But she made her first big mistake of the Olympics on the even bars. She botched a transition from the upper bar to the lower bar, a miscue that messed with her momentum and forced her to muscle her way back into her routine. Biles was visibly annoyed as she made her way off the podium.
Her score of 13.733 dropped her behind Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade and Algeria’s Kaylia Nemour through two rotations. Suni Lee was in fifth after the second routine.
After a solid routine on the balance beam, Biles received a score of 14.566 and recaptured the lead over Andrade but only by 0.166 points. Lee moved into a tie for fourth.
So, it all came down to the floor routine to decide the medals.
It has been 11 years since someone actually beat Biles in the all-around in meets she has started and finished into the finals.
