Lewis was shot and killed while police say they were trying to arrest him in connection with an attempted homicide.
DENVER — Saturday marks 100 days since an unarmed man was shot and killed by Aurora police.
37-year-old Kilyn Lewis was fatally shot on May 23 in the area of East Alameda Avenue and South Havana Street, as Aurora Police SWAT and the Denver Police Department’s fugitive unit were attempting to take him into custody in connection with an attempted homicide, according to Aurora Police.
Edited body camera video released by Aurora Police appears to show Lewis with his hands in the air, holding a cellphone, when one officer fires a single shot.
Family members and community activists gathered on the steps of the State Capitol building Saturday demanding more answers.
“This marks 100 days that my son has not gotten justice, and we’re going to continue this fight on and on until we do get justice for Kilyn Lewis,” said Lewis’ mother, LaRonda Jones.
Community members have attended multiple city council meetings since the shooting, calling on the City of Aurora to provide more information on the shooting.
Jones asked for even more support as she waits for an outside investigation into the shooting to conclude.
“I want everyone to feel what I’m feeling right now, and say no more,” she said. “Because in numbers, we have that power.”
