KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Former LSU star and current Kansas City Chiefs running back is being recognized for his act of heroism during a mass shooting at the Chiefs’ Super Bowl Celebration parade.
During Wednesday’s mass shooting Edwards-Helaire reportedly shielded a teenager as gunfire erupted nearby.
The boy’s mother thanked Edwards-Helaire in a social media post while he replied in his own Facebook post saying, “Hey Mrs. Penny, Zach was brave for sure!! Sorry the family, and all of Chiefs Kingdom had to experience this. Just wanted to Thank Zach for trusting me and knowing I’ll protect him.”
The shooting in Kansas City left radio personality Lisa Lopez-Galvan dead and injured over 20 people. Two juveniles were arrested by police and charged in connection to the shooting.
The foundation, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to ending school violence & formed after the Uvalde school shooting, also recognized Trey Filter from Maize, Kansas with the National Heroism Award for being credited with tackling, disarming, and detaining one of the shooters until police arrived.
