AfterHours Denver sets up a market where people without homes can shop for essentials, at no cost.

DENVER — For more than a decade AfterHours Denver runs the Christmas In The Park market. Hundreds of volunteers help hundreds of people experiencing homelessness get what they need to survive.

“Christmas is so much about receiving. Obviously we receive from our loved ones and we give to our loved ones, but we want to make this event about giving back to people in need, especially to homeless people in our community,” said Pastor Logan Robertson with AfterHours Denver.

That feeling was received.

“Man, this is crazy. I like it. I love it. This is alright, everybody coming together to just do something for the community,” Miguel told 9NEWS.

The event gets set up like a market, where people can go through and shop for what they need: gloves, socks, shoes, coats, etc. The event began with a few people wanting to do something meaningful on Christmas.

“This is one way to feel grateful for what we have, the community that we have, and for all the people in Denver whether they’re housed or unhoused,” said Robertson.

Miguel got in line at 5 a.m. to be one of the first. He said he really appreciates people trying to help him. He walked away with a suitcase filled with essentials.

“I’m so happy. I’m still needing a place, but I’m not going to worry about it right now. Right now, I’m just going to worry about what I got,” he said.

Some needs will take longer than one day to solve, but Miguel said he left feeling like he was in a better position than the day before.
