The pursuit began near 45th Avenue and Havana Street and ended near U.S. 36 and Pecos Street, police said.

ADAMS COUNTY, Colo. — A child is in critical condition after a driver of an SUV led Denver Police on a pursuit early Sunday morning, later crashing at U.S. 36 and Pecos Street in unincorporated Adams County. Three people, including the child, inside the SUV had been shot before the pursuit and crash, according to a Denver Police (DPD) spokesperson.

Someone inside the  SUV, which already had bullet holes in it, tried flagging down a Denver ambulance, police said. When the ambulance stopped, the driver drove off.

The ambulance’s crew radioed out about the SUV and Denver officers located it near 45th Avenue and Havana Street, police said. Officers tried to initiate a traffic stop, but the SUV’s driver sped off and a pursuit was authorized as officers were worried there may be shooting victims needing help, the DPD spokesperson said.

The SUV later crashed on Pecos Street at U.S. 36, and the driver, a man, ran off from the scene, police said. He later walked into a hospital suffering from at least one gunshot wound. His condition was not immediately known, police said.

At the crash scene, officers found a woman and a child suffering from gunshot wounds. They were rushed to a nearby hospital. Police said the child’s condition is critical, while the woman’s injuries are not considered life-threatening, DPD said.

Denver Police said Aurora Police is handling the shooting that injured the people in the SUV. 9NEWS has contacted Aurora Police for more information but has not yet heard back.
