At 1,907 feet tall, the tower – referred to as Legends Tower – would be more than 100 feet taller than the current tallest building in the U.S.
OKLAHOMA CITY — New York could soon lose its claim to the tallest building in the U.S. to Oklahoma City.
The Oklahoma City City Council recently greenlit a zoning change helping to clear the way for developers to build a 1,907-foot-tall tower without any height restrictions. At that height, the controversial tower – referred to as Legends Tower – would be more than 100 feet taller than the current tallest building in the U.S., the One Trade Center Tower in New York.
The proposed Legends Tower’s 1,907-square-foot height is meant to commemorate the year Oklahoma became a state.
“People have asked me often, what do you think about this development? I mean, the sky’s the limit, no pun intended,” Oklahoma City City Councilmember Nikki Nice said.
Nice said during the council meeting that she couldn’t recall if any residents had pushed against the project, but said, “I know some folks are a little nervous to see how this could be built.”
The vote to approve removing the height restrictions ultimately passed 8-1.
The project, led by Matteson Capital and architecture firm AO is part of a larger development in Oklahoma’s Bricktown.
Plans filed with the city for the project include 86 levels of luxury amenities with one amenity level, topped by 12 levels of luxury penthouse space. Then, above that, a 16-level Hyatt hotel and nine more levels of Hyatt residences. Finally, there will be an indoor pool topped by two levels that will have a restaurant and observation deck.
The mixed-use development project spans approximately 5 million square feet. Other amenities include a lagoon surrounded by a boardwalk, according to the plans. They don’t include office space.
The Legends Tower will be set among three smaller towers. The supertall tower is part of the second phase of the project.
“For the second phase, the hope would be to start in a couple of years and it would probably take about three years to build the second phase of that project,” said Rob Budetti of AO.
The fourth tower would likely take about “five years for it to come online,” Budetti said.
The full project still needs further approvals to continue to move forward.
