Peyton Green showed up at a hospital showing signs she had recently given birth but did not have an infant with her, according to investigators.
HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. — A 22-year-old woman was sentenced Thursday in Douglas County District Court to 40 years in prison for the death of her newborn who was found stuffed inside a bathroom cabinet in her home.
On Sept. 26, 2020, Peyton Green arrived at the UCHealth Highlands Ranch emergency room with concerns about bleeding. She consented to a Sexual Assault Nurses Examination, commonly referred to as a SANE exam, and during it, staff found injuries consistent with giving birth, the DA’s Office said.
Bloodwork showed Green was pregnant, but she denied ever having a child.
The case was reported to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, and deputies went to Green’s home and searched the house for a newborn baby. They eventually found the baby’s body in the cabinets below a bathroom sink.
Through their investigation, detectives found text messages where Green told her ex-boyfriend and another friend that she was pregnant, which contradicted statements she made at the hospital.
An autopsy was performed on the infant, and the official coroner’s report indicated it was a live birth.
After a yearlong investigation, Green was arrested in October 2021 in Wyoming. On Thursday, she pleaded guilty to child abuse – knowingly and recklessly causing death, which is a class 2 felony.
“Had this mother told the truth about her pregnancy or called for help after giving birth, this tragedy may have been avoided,” said District Attorney John Kellner.
