Head-to-Head
England and Malta’s first ever encounter took place way back in 1971 during a European qualifier that saw the Three Lions winning 1-0 away with Martin Peters’ winner.
Since then, the two sides have faced off a total of six times – all of which were won by the English national team.
In fact, Gareth Southgate’s side has enjoyed tremendous success against the Maltese team as they have scored a staggering 18 goals and conceded only once.
Southgate’s team won 4-0 in the first leg at Malta back in June.
Team news
And hello from me too and welcome to SunSport’s live blog coverage of England’s penultimate Euro 2024 qualifier against Malta.
The Three Lions’ manager Gareth Southgate is facing an injury crisis as he is without Real Madrid superstar Jude Bellingham due to a shoulder injury.
Lewis Dunk (groin), James Maddison (ankle), Callum Wilson (hamstring) and Levi Colwill (shoulder) will also be absent.
And of course, Marcus Rashford as well as Kalvin Phillips didn’t join the rest of the squad due to personal reasons.
John Stones, Luke Shaw, Ben Chilwell and Reece James are also notable absentees.
Malta boss Michele Marcolini, on the other hand, isn’t dealing with any significant injury issues and might hand a debut to Jamaican-born Kemar Reid.
Marcolini’s attack has also been bolstered by the returns of Teddy Teuma and Jodi Jones.
England’s form
The Three Lions are in fine form and have not lost a game since their World Cup quarter-final defeat to France in December.
Meanwhile, Malta have lost all seven of their Euro 2024 qualifiers so far.
The last time these two sides met, England came out on top in a comfortable 4-0 win.
