The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office said they rescued two employees and two firefighters who were exposed to a possible chemical leak at Western Sugar Co-Op.
MORGAN COUNTY, Colo. — Four people were sent to the hospital after being exposed to a possible hazardous material at a sugar factory located in eastern Colorado, according to the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff’s deputies and Fort Morgan volunteer firefighters responded to a call from the Western Sugar Co-Op at 18317 Highway 144 on Wednesday at 3:32 p.m. about a “man that was down and unconscious.”
According to a news release, as first responders were on their way to the location, they found out there was a second person down and that the cause may be a “possible hazardous material/chemical leak.”
When rescue crews were on scene, they called in additional help and manpower on a “confined space rescue and decontamination.”
The sheriff said two Western Sugar employees were rescued from a confined space about 10 feet below the ground. Two Fort Morgan firemen also suffered exposure to a hazardous material during the rescue operation.
All four people who were injured were taken to Saint Elizabeth Hospital. The sheriff’s office said they did not have any further information on the condition of the patients.
