Rooney had a horror time at St Andrew’s, having won just two of his 15 games in charge.

But Rooney is now set for a comeback with Plymouth, who narrowly avoided relegation from the Championship on a thrilling last day of the season.

The club are on the lookout for a new boss after the sacking of Ian Foster.

Plymouth chief Neil Dewsnip is driving the interest in Rooney, according to The Telegraph.

The Manchester United legend was a youngster breaking through at Everton while Dewsnip was an academy coach at Goodison Park.

They have reportedly kept in contact since.

SunSport understand talks have not taken place yet – but Rooney is being considered.

Rooney, who has also previously managed Derby and DC United, is set for a busy summer as he has already agreed to join the BBC for their coverage of Euro 2024.

But despite his venture into punditry, the 38-year-old has made it clear he would like to get back into the dugout.

“It was a setback what happened at Birmingham but I’m a fighter and I want to get back into it.

“You know as a manager being sacked is part of the job and you will have setbacks. It’s about how you bounce back.

“I’ve had some good time to reflect and will make sure I get it right next time.”

Plymouth have also been linked with ex-Hull boss Liam Rosenoir, who supposedly turned down the move to Home Park.

And SunSport can reveal Sheffield United manager Paul Heckingbottom has held talks with Argyle.
