Red Devils linked to Poch
Mauricio Pochettino is in the frame to be the new Manchester United boss two years after missing out on the job, writes NEIL CUSTIS.
Pochettino has left Chelsea by mutual consent and INEOS chief Sir Jim Ratcliffe could be ready to have talks with the former Tottenham boss with Erik ten Hag clinging onto his job at Old Trafford.
The 52-year-old Argentine was in a two-horse race with Ten Hag for the United job in April 2022, as he approached the exit door at Paris Saint-Germain.
United’s then kingmakers Richard Arnold and John Murtough are understood to have spoken to him then, but were swayed by Ten Hag’s depth of knowledge of United and his ideas to turn things round.
While the Dutchman did just that in his first season, finishing third and winning the Carabao Cup, things have gone into reverse in this campaign with an eighth-placed Premier League finish and group stage exit from the Champions League.
United still have this Saturday’s FA Cup Final to come, in a repeat of last year’s Wembley showpiece against neighbours Manchester City.
‘Rashford would suit Gunners’
Victor Osimhen or Marcus Rashford could solve Arsenal’s lack of true firepower.
So says Gunners’ legend Emmanuel Petit, who also reckons Arsenal need up to four new players to dethrone champs Manchester City next season.
Speaking on behalf of BoyleSports, who offer Euro 2024 betting odds, the ex-midfielder said: “I think Arsenal need a 30-goal striker to finally win the Premier League and that man could be Victor Osimhen, who has been amazing with Lille then Napoli.
“His dream is to come to England and he could be brilliant here. He’s physically so strong and is an out and out number nine, so he’d be my first choice.
“But I also think Rashford would be a great addition as he can play out wide and up front. To compete with Man City, Arsenal need four more players, though.
“City can bring on five players with incredible quality and right now, Arsenal can’t, so they need to have a busy summer ahead.”
No-one else like Shaw, says Southgate
Gareth Southgate says he is going to have to get creative at left-back after admitting injury-hit Luke Shaw is a “long shot” to make the Euros, writes TOM BARCLAY.
The Manchester United star, 28, has been included in Southgate’s provisional squad. But he looks unlikely to make the tournament having been out since February with a muscle issue.
Southgate said: “I have to say he’s up against it. He’s missed a lot of football.
“The fact that he’s been our first choice in that position, we’re probably giving him a bit longer than we might have done. I’d have to say he’s a long shot.
“There isn’t another player like Shaw who can build and come and play off the outside of his foot with that sort of craft.
“That player isn’t there. So we have to find a different way. Some of the biggest clubs in our league have had to adapt without a natural left-back.
“Some have played midfield players there, some have played centre-backs there. We’re going to have to do something similar.”
