Aurora Police arrested a 31-year-old man on suspicion of kidnapping and sexual assault of a girl on Friday.

AURORA, Colo. — Editor’s note: This story includes details about a sexual assault on a child that might be disturbing.

An Aurora man accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting an 11-year-old girl took her into an apartment bedroom, blocked the door with a dumbbell and touched her inappropriately, according to the arrest affidavit in the case.

The girl was able to escape the apartment and find someone to help her call 911 after this happened Friday morning. She told Aurora Police police she was on her way to the bus stop when the man approached and grabbed her.

When officers arrived after her escape and 911 call, they searched the man’s home at Macon Street and East Colfax Avenue. They arrested 31-year-old Shukurani Mulenda, 31.

The girl told police that she had noticed the man, who she didn’t know or recognize, in a store parking lot and that he appeared to be intoxicated. He asked her a question in a language other than English and grabbed her arm, according to the affidavit.

He pulled her through an alley into the back door of an apartment and into a bedroom, the girl told police. After blocking the door with a dumbbell, he turned on music on a speaker and attempted to take off her clothes. He then touched her, and she was able to push him away, move the dumbbell that blocked the door and escape the apartment.

Officers found that Mulenda lived with his parents who speak Swahili and don’t understand English. Through a translator, they said they weren’t aware of anything happening in the apartment, the affidavit says.

Mulenda told police that he had done nothing wrong and hadn’t left the apartment that day; however, surveillance cameras from a nearby business showed him interacting with the girl and taking her to his apartment, according to the affidavit.

Mulenda was being held in the Arapahoe County jail on $100,000 cash-only bond on suspicion of counts including sexual assault on a child. He is next set to appear in court on Thursday.

He was previously convicted of third-degree sexual assault in 2020 in Adams County, but he was not listed in the state’s sex offender registry because the conviction was for a misdemeanor. The registry only lists people convicted of felonies, according to a spokesman for the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
