Denver has 86 sirens positioned across the city, including 75 within Denver and 11 at Denver International Airport.

DENVER — Outdoor sirens will sound in the Mile High City on Wednesday.

The Denver Office of Emergency Management plans to test outdoor warning sirens around Denver at 11 a.m. Wednesday.

The Denver Office of Emergency Management said residents could expect to hear the siren for at least three minutes, allowing for the evaluation of new remote activation technology.

Denver has 86 sirens positioned across the city, including 75 within Denver and 11 at Denver International Airport.

The sirens are designed to alert individuals who are outdoors. Residents inside buildings may not hear the sirens.

Originally utilized primarily for tornado warnings, the system has evolved to alert residents to all-hazard situations requiring immediate protective actions and to check for further information.

“Denver OEM is dedicated to implementing innovative solutions to enhance efficiency and safety,” said Matthew Mueller, Executive Director of the Office of Emergency Management. “We are excited to test this new technology, which will enable us to activate the sirens remotely and efficiently in the event of a major emergency.”

The Denver Office of Emergency Management said spring siren testing time is a a good reminder to review family emergency preparedness plans, kits, and to register for a DenverREADY or DenverLISTO class to increase emergency preparedness.
