Sponsors said Senate Bill 233 will reduce commercial property tax assessment rates and home valuations.

DENVER — With at least three days left in the 2024 session for a bill to make it from start to finish, Gov. Jared Polis, lawmakers, and business group heads announced a deal on property tax legislation Monday.

The prime sponsors of Senate Bill 233 are Reps. Chris deGruy Kennedy, D-Lakewood and Lisa Frizell, R-Castle Rock, and Sens. Barbara Kirkmeyer, R-Weld County, and Sen. Chris Hansen, D-Denver, whose draft property tax bill got a thumbs down from the state’s property tax commission 10 days ago. It was back to the drawing board and days of negotiations between the Polis administration, Colorado Concern, the Colorado Chamber of Commerce, lawmakers, and others.

Senate Bill 233 will reduce commercial property tax assessment rates from 29% to 25% over three years. For homeowners, valuations would be reduced from 6.8% to 6.7%, along with a $55,000 reduction in home value upon which those valuations are based.
