Washington State is asking for help naming the new variety of apple which is described as “tart and sweet, firm, crisp, and juicy.”

PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State University is asking for the public’s help in choosing a name for its latest variety of apples.

The variety, currently called WA 64, has been in development for more than 20 years and is less susceptible to certain diseases. The apple is described as a mix between Honeycrisp and Cripps Pink, which is better known under the trademarked name of Pink Lady.

“We’re looking for a name that’s memorable and punchy,” said Jeremy Tamsen, director of innovation and commercialization for WSU’s College of Agricultural, Human and Natural Resource Sciences. “An ideal name might play on our apple’s qualities or draw a connection with Washington state, where WA 64 will be exclusively grown for at least the next 10 years.”

“WA 64 is a great balance of tart and sweet, firm, crisp, and juicy,” said Kate Evans, professor and head of WSU’s apple breeding program. “In taste tests, people prefer its texture to Cripps Pink — it’s crisper.”

The contest to name the apple is open to all U.S. residents age 18 and older and ends May 5. The person who submits the winning name will receive a box of WA 64 apples. Click here to enter the contest.

The new variety will be available to growers starting in 2026, but they are not expected to hit store shelves until 2029.
