DENVER — The cap cleansing has begun.
The Broncos informed part-time starting defensive tackle Jonathan Harris he will not receive the $2.985 million low tender as a restricted free agent, thus setting him free to the open market next week.
Harris, who was a high school teammate of former Broncos tight end Troy Fumagali at Waubonsie Valley in Aurora, Illinois, played his college ball at Lindenwood (Missouri) University. Undrafted, he spent the first half of his 2019 rookie season with his hometown Chicago Bears but then was claimed off waivers by the Broncos.
Harris, 27, played each of the past four seasons with the Broncos. He is coming off his best season in 2023, when he started 5 games and played in all 17 along the defensive interior front. A quiet guy with an easy smile and friendly demeanor, Harris fit in well in the Broncos’ locker room but the RFA tenders have become so rich, they are almost counterproductive to role players.
Plus, the Broncos are budgeting their roster like never before in light of the $85 dead-cap hit they are absorbing over the next two seasons with the release of quarterback Russell Wilson.
