The off-duty deputy was hit head-on while driving on Weld County Road 49, Colorado State Patrol said.
WELD COUNTY, Colo. — An off-duty Adams County sheriff’s deputy was killed in a head-on crash on Christmas Eve.
Colorado State Patrol (CSP) said the crash happened a little after 5:20 p.m. Sunday on Weld County Road 49 south of Weld County Road 40. That’s about 11 miles east of Gilcrest.
The driver of a vehicle crossed the centerline and hit the off-duty deputy’s vehicle head-on, according to CSP. The driver of the vehicle that ran into the deputy’s suffered life-threatening injuries, a CSP spokesperson said. There were two young children –a 1-year-old boy and a 2-year-old girl — in the vehicle that hit the deputy’s, according to CSP.
The girl suffered serious injuries, while the boy suffered minor injuries, CSP said. All of the people involved in the two-car crash were wearing seatbelts, according to CSP.
Troopers are still investigating, but do not believe speed, alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.
The deputy’s name has not been released.
In a Christmas morning Facebook post, the Adams County Sheriff’s Office said in part:
“As we rise to greet the day, there’s an undeniable coldness that seizes our hearts, a stark reminder that we have lost another incredible member of the Sheriff’s Office.”
