Denver’s first snow has come after Halloween 28 times and only five of those seasons finish above average.
DENVER — Wednesday morning will be Denver’s last chance to get October snow this year. It won’t be much if it happens, but it only takes a measurement of a tenth of an inch at Denver International Airport to register as an official snowfall.
It looks like there will be a brief window between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. that could deliver the best conditions for some light snow accumulation. If it doesn’t happen Wednesday, we’ll be in some unusual territory as that first snow of the season in Denver has only come after Halloween 28 times. That’s just 21% of the time.
October snow has been on a slight decline in Denver with about a 9% reduction over the last 30 years.
But is it really that important to get snow before November? Well, it reduces the odds of making it up to our average of 56.6 inches of snow by the end of the season.
Out of the 28 slow starts recorded in Denver’s history, only five of them finished up with above average snow.
And the forecast for November is not helping. While the first week of the month is showing a cooler and wetter signal, the overall outlook is for a drier than normal month.
March is usually the month that makes or breaks the snow season in Denver. It is on average the city’s snowiest month and can turn a dismal snow season around in a matter of hours.
So, the key word for Denver snow lovers is patience.
