DIOGO JOTA proved to be the difference maker for Liverpool in south London as they overcame a tricky test at Crystal Palace.
The Portugal star struck to hand Arne Slot’s side a 1-0 lead after nine minutes on his 100th start for the club.
A incisive pass from Kostas Tsimikas found Cody Gakpo making an inverted run into the channel, before he whipped a low cross to just in front of the penalty spot.
Some nifty movement from Jota got him free in the box before he nipped in front of Trevoh Chalobah to poke home the ball, with the pace of the strike beating Dean Henderson.
It was one-way traffic for the remainder of the first half, though Jota missed a great chance to double the lead when he fired wide in open space.
Oliver Glasner’s side responded well in the second half and had a penalty appeal waved away after Virgil van Dijk appeared to pull back an Eagles attacker in the box.
Liverpool suffered a major blow as Alisson went down to the floor before he was replaced by debutant Vítezslav Jaros.
More to follow.
