The Bundesliga giants have so far paired former United target Kim Min-jae and Arsenal-linked Dayot Upamecano in central defence.

But ex-Germany midfielder Matthaus told Sky Sports Germany: “The defence is and remains Bayern’s Achilles heel,

“Matthijs de Ligt was sold, even though he was the most stable defender over the past two years. He was the leader of the backline. Now Bayern are again looking for a successor to David Alaba.

For me, it’s pathetic that this leader is missing. If de Ligt had not been sold, I would not have worries at (about) FC Bayern now

“But my opinion about him is probably different to the people in charge. It’s a decision that has to be accepted.

“But many – including within the team – are just shaking their heads. Because the players also know that their defence is shaky. And then the best defender is sold.”

Mikel claims Gunners are a ‘bit short’

Mikel Arteta believes he is still “short” of striking options.

That’s the Arsenal manager’s clearest hint he might target more than just the signing of midfielder Mikel Merino before Friday’s transfer deadline.

Juve want Chelsea target on loan from Utd

Juventus reportedly only want Chelsea target Jadon Sancho on loan from Manchester United, according to Sky Sports.

Their reporter Dharmesh Sheth revealed what he knows about the situation on X.

He wrote: “Juventus have made clear to Manchester United they want loan for Jadon Sancho. Juve know of Chelsea interest.

“Now waiting for United & Sancho to make decision. United’s preference is permanent. Sancho has 3 years (2+1) left on deal so loan not ruled out.”

Ivan edging closer to exit

Possible Man Utd, Arsenal and Chelsea target Ivan Toney was left out of Brentford’s squad for the second Premier League game in a row, as talk of his transfer intensifies.

Manager Thomas Frank said: “The status is the same as last week.

“Things are going on with transfer speculation so the decision is the same. He is training well, there is no problem.

“I’d rather focus on the game and the players that are playing instead of talking about him.”

How Red Devils could look with Chilwell & Sterling

Manchester United could be reinforced by two Chelsea outcasts before Friday’s transfer deadline, writes TONY ROBERTSON.

The Blues are said to be among a number of clubs interested in Jadon Sancho, alongside Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain.

Sancho, 24, is yet to feature in a matchday squad for Erik ten Hag‘s side this season despite apparently patching things up with the Dutchman following their bust-up last season.

SunSport have taken a look at the possible look of the Red Devils for the upcoming season.
