SAN ANTONIO — Security forces at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland were forced to return fire at “active shooters” who were trying to gain entry at the main gate outside the JBSA-Chapman Training Annex early Saturday morning, officials say.
According to a press release from JBSA, security officials exchanged gunfire with the active shooters around 4:30 a.m.
JBSA officials are calling this an off-base shooting incident and said there was no active threat to the military facility.
Officials did not say if anyone was hurt in the shootout or how many shooters were involved.
The shooters are not known to have military connections, according to the press release.
The gate to the training annex was initially closed and traffic was redirected to an entry point north on Ray Ellison Boulevard. As of 10 a.m. Saturday, the annex gate has reopened and normal operations have resumed.
Local law enforcement responded outside the military facility and are investigating the shooting.
No other details were provided.
