Summer Olympic Games | Colorado athletes to watch Monday, Aug. 5

PARIS, France — Two Colorado athletes compete for a gold medal Monday in track and field events, while others start their competitions at the Summer Games.

Here are the Colorado athletes to cheer for on Monday at the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris.

Sport climbing


Colin Duffy, of Broomfield, started climbing when he was 5 years old. He was the youngest member of the USA climbing team at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. In his most recent World Championships in 2023, Duffy won silver in Bouldering & Lead Combined. He attended Stargate Charter School and the University of Colorado Boulder. He currently lives in Salt Lake City.

Track and field


Valarie Allman, who competes in discus, spent most of her childhood in Hershey, Pennsylvania, before moving to Longmont. She was the co-valedictorian at Silver Creek High School. She’s taking a leave of absence in her masters in communication program at Stanford University to train. She won gold in Tokyo so this will be her second Olympics.

Elise Cranny, of Niwot, currently lives in Boulder. She’s competing in the women’s 5,000 meters. In high school, Cranny won two state cross country championships and two state track titles. This will be her second Olympics. She came in 13th in Tokyo in the 5,000 meters.

Mixed triathlon

Taylor Knibb and Morgan Pearson are competing in the mixed triathlon finals.

For Knibb, triathlon is her second sport of the Summer Olympic. Knibb, who lives in Boulder, is a silver medalist from the 2020 Games in the mixed relay event in triathlon. She competed in her first time trial in 2023 at the USA Cycling Pro Road National Championship and placed fourth, then came back and won the event this year, earning her spot on Team USA’s cycling team.

Pearson, from New Vernon, New Jersey, is a seven-time All-American at the University of Colorado Boulder. He won a silver medal as a member of the U.S. relay team at the debut mixed relay event in Tokyo. In 2021, he became the first American man to win multiple World Triathlon Champion Series medals.

Wrestling


Amit Elor – whose current residences are Walnut Creek, California, and Colorado Springs – has won nine gold World Championship medals. Her older sister and older brother were also wrestlers. They both won junior national titles, which inspired her to start wrestling.

If Elor wins in the Round of 16, she moves onto the quarterfinals at 7:56 a.m. and the semifinals at 1:28 p.m.
