With emergency managers using different methods to notify people, it’s a good time to remind you to sign up for emergency alerts through your county.
COLORADO, USA — Four fires burning in the Front Range have prompted evacuations, and emergency managers using different approaches to alert people of those evacuations.
The Alexander Mountain Fire in Larimer County, the Stone Creek and Lake Shore fires in Boulder County and the Quarry Fire in Jefferson County continue to burn throughout Colorado as the state faces a stretch of dry and hot conditions.
With all the different methods being used by emergency managers to give people the latest information, it’s a good time to sign up to receive alerts through your county. It’s also a good idea to sign up for alerts if you work or visit these areas often.
Emergency alerts for Larimer County
In Larimer County, where the Alexander Mountain Fire has scorched nearly 7,000 acres, deputies have gone door-to-door alerting people of the fires.
Officials also sent opt-in alerts through NOCO Alert, a service that sends messages to all landlines in the area, but requires people with cellphones to register to receive messages.
Emergency alerts for Boulder County
Both the Stone Canyon and Lake Shore fires are burning in Boulder County, where emergency managers faced criticism for not deploying wireless emergency alerts that ping all phones during the Marshall Fire.
Boulder County officials decided to send both Wireless Emergency Alerts and notifications through BOCO Alert, which require cell phone users to opt in to receive messages. More information about Boulder County’s emergency notification system can be found in the Boulder Office of Disaster Management website.
Emergency alerts for Jefferson County
For Jefferson County’s Quarry Fire, officials are prompting residents to opt in to receive notifications via LookoutAlert, where messages can be delivered through text, email and voice message.
The option to receive alerts in additional languages may be available, per the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office website.
