Cheyanne Villa, 30, pleaded guilty to one count of attempted murder and one count of tampering with physical evidence.
EVANS, Colorado — The mother of a boy who police said suffered permanent brain damage as a result of abuse when he was 3 months old entered a guilty plea and was sentenced Friday.
Cheyanne Villa, 30, pleaded guilty to one count of attempted murder and one count of tampering with physical evidence, according to court documents. She was immediately sentenced to 27 years in prison. Other charges against her were dismissed.
On Nov. 22, 2020, Evans Police Department officers were called to an ER where the baby was being treated for seizures. Hospital staff determined the boy had bleeding in his brain, and he was transported to Children’s Hospital Colorado in Aurora by helicopter. He was immediately taken to the intensive care unit, where, according to police, it took several days to stabilize him enough to perform a complete evaluation.
During the evaluation, doctors discovered the child had several broken bones throughout his “entire body,” police said.
After several weeks in the hospital, the infant recovered to the point where he could be released to Child Protective Services. However, according to EPD, the boy suffered irreversible brain damage and will face “significant challenges” for the rest of his life.
Villa and the boy’s father, 26-year-old Raphael Engwongwo, were both arrested in April 2021.
Engwongwo is charged with child abuse and false reporting. His next court appearance is set for April 9.
