The award-winning artist performed his biggest hit for the inmates.

GENESEE COUNTY, Mich. — Country singer and rapper Jelly Roll took a page out of Johnny Cash’s playbook and made a special appearance at the Genesee County Jail.

Before performing for the inmates, Jelly Roll took time to talk about his own incarcerations during his younger years. The artist was in and out of jails since the age of 14 for drugs, robbery and other crimes.

Jelly Roll also took time to applaud the work that Genesee County Sheriff Christopher R. Swanson has done for justice reform in the county jail.

Swanson has implemented programs, like the I.G.N.I.T.E. program, for inmates to receive an education, job certifications and post-incarceration work opportunities.

Jelly Roll celebrated graduates of the I.G.N.I.T.E. program who earned GEDs, barber school degrees and welding certifications.

But the most exciting moments at Genesee County Jail were when Jelly Roll took the stage and performed.

The award-winning artist performed his biggest hit for the inmates, “Need A Favor.” You can see that everyone in the jail, including Sheriff Swanson, was loving the song.

Jelly Roll told inmates that he travels to dozens of prisons to visit, talk to, and perform for incarcerated people. He made a note that while all prisons “suck,” the one in Genesee County was one of the better ones.
