The rowing team dominated from the start of the 2,000-meter race, and managed to hold off a last-minute push by New Zealand to end with a 5:49:03 time, less than a second ahead of the island nation. Great Britain took bronze.

The U.S. team, made up of Michael Grady, Nick Mead, Justin Best and Liam Corrigan, was visibly emotional on the podium as they accepted their gold.

It was also the first rowing gold medal for any U.S. Olympians in eight years.
