Gunners must spend Isak of money
Paul Merson has told Arsenal to break the bank for £80m-rated Newcastle star Alexander Isak, writes JORDAN DAVIES.
However, the Gunners legend admits they may not need to in the January transfer window if Gabriel Jesus continues his impressive goal scoring form.
Having scored just once in 33 appearances, Brazilian striker Jesus now has six from his last four in all competitions after netting in Wednesday’s 3-1 win over Brentford.
But with Bukayo Saka – who has nine goals in all competitions so far – out injured until at least March, boss Mikel Arteta could be in the market for another attacker this month, for the right price.
And ex-Arsenal midfielder Merson sees Isak, 25 – with 12 goals and four assists in 17 Prem outings for the Toon and three-and-a-half years left on his contract – as the answer.
Merson said: “If I was Arsenal and had the money, I’d go out and buy [Alexander] Isak. I’d break the bank for him. He’s the best of the best and takes Arsenal to another level.
“If Jesus can keep doing what he’s doing, they won’t have to [bring in a striker].
“But looking at the all-round picture and next season as well, if they can get hold of Isak, who I think is the best in the business at the moment, I think that would be a massive coup for Arsenal.”
