Teen in hospital after motorcycle crash, police search for driver

GREELEY, Colo. — A 17-year-old boy is in the hospital after he was hit while riding a motorcycle in Greeley.

John Do said it happened Monday morning while he was riding a motorcycle down Highway 85 in Greeley.

“I was on my way to get my motorcycle endorsement,” said Do. “Scared by myself. I had no one with me.”

Do told 9NEWS that he spotted an SUV driving in the opposite direction trying to turn left onto 22nd Street. “She just came straight at me,” he said. “Her car so her car started coming at me really fast. I closed my eyes right away. I thought I died.”

Do said he didn’t feel the SUV crash into him, but he heard it.

“I had my backpack on and I was sliding across the street,” said Do. “I remember I just looked up and heard a lot of metal. There was a lot of tire screeching, people trying to yell at her to stop.”

The SUV didn’t stop, said Do, not even to check on him to make sure he was OK.

“That’s really something that hurts the most,” said Do. “If it were me, I would’ve stopped.”

Do broke all five toes on his left foot and had to get his big toe partially amputated. “Both my shoes flew off and my left leg got pretty smashed,” said Do. “The helmet definitely saved my life. If I didn’t have my helmet on, I would’ve been dead.”

Now, more than anything, Do wants the driver who hit him to take accountability. “It’s traumatized me,” he said. “I probably won’t be on a bike ever again.”

A GoFundMe account has now been set up to help Do pay his medical bills.

“I’m just a teen trying to make sure all this stuff gets paid for but right now I’m not trying to worry about the money,” said Do. “I’m more worried about my feet because I have a bright future ahead of me.”
