The first round of snow is confined to Colorado’s mountains, but a second round of snow will impact the Front Range and plains.

DENVER — Two rounds of snow will impact Colorado before clearing out for the weekend.

The first round of snow will mainly be confined to the mountains on Thursday. The northern mountains are expected to see the heaviest snowfall.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Colorado’s northern mountains, including the Elkhead and Park Mountains, through Friday. Those areas could get 6 to 20 inches of snow with locally higher amounts.

Winds could gust as high as 55 mph in areas such as Rabbit Ears Pass in northwest Colorado. Snow-covered roads will make travel hazardous in some mountain areas.

A second round of snow moves in Friday afternoon. The snow will spread into the Denver metro area, as well as the urban Front Range corridor and the eastern plains, on Friday afternoon and evening.

Although snowfall will be light along the Front Range, the Denver metro area and the plains, cold temperatures will likely make roads slick after sunset Friday. The cold front will drop highs into the 30s and 40s on Friday in Denver. According to 9NEWS meteorologist Chris Bianchi, there’s a chance for 1 to 3 inches of snowfall with the storm.

Colorado will warm up Saturday morning. A high pressure ridge will build into Colorado with fair and mild weather expected into next week.
