The sinkhole was found by a maintenance worker near the Town of Eagle, according to the state Department of Transportation.
EAGLE COUNTY, Colo — A sinkhole snarled traffic and forced officials to close the westbound lanes of Interstate 70 in Eagle County on Tuesday afternoon.
The westbound closure covers a 10-mile stretch between Wolcott (Exit 157) and Eagle (Exit 147), said a Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) spokesperson.
A CDOT maintenance worker found the sinkhole on the shoulder around 5 a.m. Tuesday, the spokesperson said.
Crews closed one westbound lane for safety concerns, CDOT said. As workers monitored the sinkhole, it began to increase in size, forcing CDOT to initiate the full closure of the westbound lanes.
Westbound drivers are being detoured onto U.S. 6 at Wolcott, CDOT said.
CDOT crews used heavy equipment to dig up pavement to inspect, fill in and repair the sinkhole, the spokesperson said.
The sinkhole was measured to be 20 feet long, 13 feet wide and 8 feet deep. CDOT officials said they hoped to fully reopen the westbound lanes later on Tuesday.
