Multiple shots were fired at the officer’s vehicle after a driver refused to stop when the officer tried to pull them over on Sunday, police said.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — A driver refused to stop when an Englewood police officer tried to pull them over before the passenger fired multiple shots out their window with a high-power rifle, narrowly missing the officer who was following behind.

That’s according to the Englewood Police Department, which said two juveniles were arrested in connection with the shooting that happened around 11 p.m. Sunday.

The incident began in the area of West Dartmouth Avenue and South Shoshone Street, when the officer initiated a traffic stop for a red Jeep Grand Cherokee for a “defective vehicle” violation. According to police, the driver refused to stop, and within a minute of the officer activating their emergency lights, more than a dozen shots were fired.

Multiple bullets struck the front end, engine, and windshield of the patrol vehicle, barely missing the officer.

The officer followed the driver through an industrial area and into a neighborhood, where the driver crashed and the vehicle was disabled. Two people ran from the vehicle, according to Englewood Police.

The patrol car also became inoperable due to the damage to the engine caused by the gunfire.

Multiple agencies responded to search for the suspects, but they were not immediately located. During a search of the suspect’s vehicle and surrounding area, investigators found an AK-47 and recovered shell casings from the scene of the shooting.

Police later identified both suspects. One was arrested Monday, and the other was arrested Tuesday.

Neither suspect is being named due to their ages. Both are facing charges of attempted first-degree murder of a public official, and additional charges are possible.
