After an old land mine was discovered in a storage unit, a shelter-in-place was issued and the bomb squad and military responded to disarm the device safely.
LAKEWOOD, Colo. — Residents in a Lakewood neighborhood received a shelter-in-place notification from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Wednesday night.
The emergency alert was sent to homes and businesses near a storage facility at 10201 W. Hampden Ave. on the frontage road after a land mine was discovered in one of the units, according to the sheriff’s office.
The sheriff’s office sent their bomb squad to the location, but said they needed assistance from the military to identify what kind of explosive it was and how to safely detonate it.
Deputies on scene reported that the object looked like it had been there for quite some time and that they wanted to dispose of the item safely, the sheriff’s office said.
The shelter messages were sent to people within a quarter mile radius of the storage facility. The sheriff posted an update to X (formerly Twitter) explaining what their crews were doing on scene.
There is no estimate of when the shelter in place will be lifted by the sheriff’s office.
