A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until 7 p.m. for northeastern Colorado. Landspouts are possible in a portion of Weld County, including Greeley.

DENVER — Severe thunderstorms are possible on the first day of summer in Colorado.

Storms are forecast Thursday afternoon and evening across the Denver metro area and eastern Colorado plains. A severe thunderstorm watch was issued for northeastern Colorado until 7 p.m. with tennis ball-sized hail and tornadoes possible.

The main threats are hail and strong wind gusts. Heavy rainfall might produce some localized flooding as well, according to the National Weather Service in Boulder.

The National Weather Service warned that brief landspouts are possible from northeast of Boulder into Weld County, mostly likely between 1:30 and 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

After two days with Denver’s high temperature only in the low 70s, the heat is back in Colorado. Summer arrives at 2:51 p.m. MT Thursday.

There is also a possibility of some moisture from Tropical Storm Alberto will drift into Colorado, enhancing some storms to severe levels, especially over northeast Colorado.

Colorado will dry out for the weekend with almost no chance for showers or storms — but plenty of heat. That hot and mostly dry weather will continue Sunday and through most of next week. Each day will be in the 90s with a few days near 100 degrees.

Denver forecast

  • THURSDAY: Mostly cloudy with scattered storms as the heat returns, high 89.
  • FRIDAY: Mostly cloudy with a chance for scattered late storms, high 86.
  • SATURDAY: Partly sunny, hot and dry, high around 90.
  • SUNDAY: Mostly sunny and warm with a slight chance for an isolated storm, high 94.
  • MONDAY: Mostly sunny and hot, high 97.
  • TUESDAY: Staying sunny and staying hot, high 98.
  • WEDNESDAY: Continued mostly sunny, hot and dry, maybe an isolated late storm, high 96.
